I am often asked what my favorite apps are for Windows and Windows Phone. So I thought I'd put together a blog post highlighting some of my favorite apps in response to that question. I'm always playing with apps on my Windows devices so my hope is to maybe do these posts every month. I have a lot of favorite apps and this post only touches on some of them (I'm already working on a second post of favorite apps). So here we go.

Flipboard (Windows):

Flipboard hit the Windows Store back in November and since then, I've been having a ton of fun with it. With Flipboard, you can find all kind of content sources to subscribe to and 'magazines' from other Flipboard users. Flipboard is like a one all-encompassing magazine of content from various sources and people. You can even add your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts (and more) and read things that are posted from your friends and family or work colleagues through those accounts. Flipboard is great for anyone who wants to read a bunch of content but you can also create your own curated magazines of things you find of interest as you read for others to subscribe to. That's what makes Flipboard fun. As I read interesting, nerdy and geeky articles I come across from my subscriptions, I add them to my own magazine called Nerd Things you can subscribe to. You can download Flipboard for free from the Windows Store.

Fitbit (Windows):

Fitbit helps you monitor your daily activity through several Fitbit devices available. I have a Fitbit Force and love it. I regularly check in on my daily progress in the Fitbit app on my Windows PC and/or tablet throughout the day. The Fitbit app shows me progress against my daily goals, as well as daily and historical graphs of activity like my steps, calories burned and floor climbing patterns. The Fitbit app also shows me my nightly sleep patterns (I am not sleeping as much as I should). And of course I can see how well my friends are doing who also have Fitbit devices. You can download Fitbit for free from the Windows Store.

With the Fitbit app from the Windows Store and the wireless sync USB dongle (the Fitbit Base Station) that came with my Fitbit Force, it actively syncs data from my Fitbit Force to the service and the app on my Windows PC or tablet throughout the day. Fitbit recently updated the app to allow for this without need to download and install a separate desktop app to enable syncing. And this also works on Windows RT tablets when you plug in the Fitbit Base Station.

Package Tracker (Windows and Windows Phone):

Like most people these days, I buy a lot of stuff online. And when things I buy get shipped, I want to be able to track them in transit. Package Tracker is a great app – available on Windows PCs and tablets as well as Windows Phones – that does just that. With Package Tracker, I can connect it to SkyDrive so that packages I am tracking at any given moment sync across all my devices. I get notifications when there are status updates for packages. It even puts packages on a map based on their location. Package Tracker is a must-have app for tracking the stuff you buy online. You can download Package Tracker from the Windows Store here for $2.49 (U.S.) and from the Windows Phone Store here for $1.99 (U.S.).

Halo: Spartan Assault (Windows and Windows Phone):

I am just loving this game. Halo: Spartan Assault is a top-down action shooter you can plan on your Windows PC or tablet or your Windows Phone – AND your Xbox. In Halo: Sparta Assault, you play as either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis stationed aboard the UNSC Infinity where you battle against Covenant forces with 25 missions (as part of 5 operations with 5 missions each). You can compete against friends in Leaderboards, take on Weekly Challenges and earn more than 40 in-game Achievements and Medals accruing to your Gamerscore and Halo Waypoint career. As an example of being not very good, I've completed 5 operations in the first mission and moving to the second mission now. But what I love about the game is being able to play on any device and have it maintain exactly where I am at in the game. I'll occasionally pop in and play a bit at work (don't tell my manager) then get on my Xbox One when I get home and play some more.

Xbox One SmartGlass (Windows and Windows Phone):

Speaking of Xbox, ever since I received my Xbox One Day 1 Edition back in November, I've been using the Xbox One SmartGlass on my tablets and Windows Phone to control and interact with my Xbox One. With SmartGlass, you can easily navigate the web on your console, turn up the volume on your TV, and select a video, music or game to play and a lot more. Read this blog post on Xbox Wire for all the details on the Xbox One SmartGlass experience. You can download Xbox One SmartGlass from the Windows Store here and from the Windows Phone Store here.

Nokia Camera (Windows Phone):

I have a Lumia 1020 and I love taking photos with it. Which is why I also love the Nokia Camera app because it makes it super easy to take good photos. Last fall, Nokia combined the Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Pro Camera apps into a single Nokia Camera app which has proven to be awesome. With the Nokia Camera app, you can control important camera settings like exposure, shutter speed, ISO, white balance and focus with just a tap of a button… plus a lot more! I suggest reading this blog post from Nokia on all that the Nokia Camera app can do. You can download the Nokia Camera app here from the Windows Phone Store if you have a PureView Lumia device such as the Nokia Lumia 1020, Lumia 925, or Lumia 1520. P.S. check out this awesome photo I took with my Lumia 1020 this last weekend on a trip to the Oregon coast!

Ok that's it! If you use any of the apps I've mentioned in this post regularly, would love to hear your thoughts in comments. Also: I am open to suggestions on any apps you think I need to try out! Stay tuned for #2 sometime next month.

A new software update for the Fire TV has begun rolling out to devices. The new update carries version number 51.1.6.0_user_516009820. Big thanks to AFTVnews reader Gary who wrote in to let us know about it and provided the pictures. Gary tells us the update has added the ability to mark apps and games as ‘Favorites', similar to the recently added photo favorites feature, in order to make them more readily available. I uncovered this feature in the previous software version source code, but it appeard to be either unfinished or disabled. No word yet on a Fire TV Stick software update, but I expect we'll see one soon, likely carrying version number 54.1.2.0.

We'll know more once this update makes its way to more devices. As always, I'll have a full overview of everything this update changes in the near future. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you get this update and if you notice any changes it brings. Update

As expected, we now have confirmation that the Fire TV Stick is also receiving a software update. The Fire TV Stick update carries version number 54.1.2.0_user_120060220 and also includes the new app favorites feature.

ReplyAFTVnewssays:July 1, 2015 at 4:02 pm

Awesome. Thanks for letting us know! Notice any changes?

ReplyRosays:July 1, 2015 at 4:13 pm

Sorry posted a reply by accident below …. Haven't looked too deep yet.. Will check in a bit and let you know.

ReplyCalvin Mickaelsays:July 5, 2015 at 7:45 pm

Any idea how to force update? I'm running the check for update on two different devices and it's not finding it.

ReplyAFTVnewssays:July 8, 2015 at 12:49 pm

There is no way to force the update. You just have to wait your turn.

Rosays:July 1, 2015 at 4:11 pm

Would be nice to be able to favorite searches too. Anything like that in there? (I just checked but I'm not up for update yet)

ReplyAFTVnewssays:July 8, 2015 at 12:51 pm

I saw reference to saving searches while digging around in the code. It may be limited to the new shopping feature though. I'm not sure yet.

ReplyCeliesays:July 1, 2015 at 9:13 pm

I'd like to know if you could favorite sideloaded apps!

Since sideloaded apps don't show up in the Fire Tv's 'App' or 'Game' area, you wont be able to sideload them.

ReplyJimmysays:July 2, 2015 at 7:23 am

Bummer. The one thing that would make this update interesting.

@AFTVnews, thanks for the answer, but I think what you meant to type was 'Since sideloaded apps don't show up in the Fire Tv's ‘App' or ‘Game' area, you wont be able to FAVORITE them.'

ReplyAFTVnewssays:July 12, 2015 at 7:09 am

Woops! You're right. Thanks for catching that mistake.

ReplyJames Monkmansays:July 2, 2015 at 12:34 am

About time(!) – the FireTV has been in need of something like this for ages. I tend to only use a dozen or so apps on a regular basis, and this will make accessing those a lot easier.

I wonder, in light of the addition to the ‘kids mode' on the kindle fire, if there will ever be an option to run the FireTV in kids mode too (as in locked down, with a simpler interface and only access to apps and movies defined by the parents). If the FireTV had that, I could let my kids use it without constant supervision.

ReplyJames Monkmansays:July 2, 2015 at 3:21 am

Damn. How stupid of me – I completely failed to notice that there's an option to do this by turning on ‘Free Time'.

Replywilliamsays:July 2, 2015 at 3:02 pm

Yea I like the freetime and pin base purchases…

Actually… I can't find a setting to turn on Free Time on my Fire TV?! What the hell? Maybe this is not available in the UK yet?

ReplyAFTVnewssays:July 3, 2015 at 6:13 am

Correct, FreeTime in only on US devices.

Fire TV Stick – 54.1.2.0_user_120060220 with Favorites available (german Fire TV Stick) – See screenshot: http://goo.gl/pCHNBk

I haven't noticed this before but bottom of my screen shows both external and internal memory storage. It could have been there before but never noticed until update.

ReplyME at AOLsays:July 2, 2015 at 7:48 am

The internal and external memory only show in applications view as far as I can tell.

ReplyAFTVnewssays:July 8, 2015 at 12:51 pm

Yup, that's a new thing added with this update.

ReplyJustinsays:July 2, 2015 at 7:39 am

I've been wanting this feature too so am looking forward to when it's available on my system. I also want games to not be listed in the apps section but the favorites should give me easy access to all the apps I regularly use.

Would also like to see prime music stations added.

Replywilliamsays:July 2, 2015 at 3:03 pm

What area are people from that have already received this update?

ReplyGuidosays:July 8, 2015 at 3:54 am

Germany:

Fire TV Stick – July 2
Fire TV – July 8

ReplyDavid Hsays:July 2, 2015 at 6:42 pm

Since the update, I cannot connect to Netflix. I receive an error message with code 'ui-113' – I am able to connect to Netflix on my laptop and computer with no problem, also my cell phone. I've tried uninstalling the Netflix app, clearing cache and data, rebooted my router several times, rebooted, unplugged fire tv, switched tv's – you name it, I cannot get it to load. Do I have to uninstall everything? As an fyi,as previous poster stated, my Kodi is working as well…

ReplyHeffeDsays:July 2, 2015 at 7:31 pm

No problem with Netflix here.

If you're still having trouble, I'd contact Netflix tech support.

ReplyHeffeDsays:July 2, 2015 at 7:29 pm

So… What good is this 'favorites' feature?

I can add an app as a favorite, but all this does is puts a heart in the lower right hand corner. Wow.

There is no favorites list, or way to sort by favorites…

Am I missing something?

ReplyMr. Marcussays:July 2, 2015 at 9:26 pm

I am of the same opinion HeffeD…so far as I can tell it just places your favorites up front in the 'Your Apps Library'. Maybe on the next update they'll add a 'your favorite Apps' category. BTW I've had my update from June 25th. I'm glad Kodi still works

Please check: does voice search include Netflix results?

Replywilliamsays:July 5, 2015 at 11:16 am

I think the voice search is available for Netflix to code into their app but Netflix has not done this…

I don't know…but you could read this

http://www.aftvnews.com/whos-to-blame-for-the-fire-tvs-lack-of-netflix-voice-search-integration/

ReplyRyansays:July 6, 2015 at 12:34 am

Thank for the link. I read that article when it was first published and it's really interesting. It's mostly speculation though, and I don't buy that Netflix would not want its results to show up in search. Netflix has had a consistent history of being very aggressive about making its service available everywhere, and its results are included in voice search features elsewhere.
I guess I was just hopeful about the new update.

Replyboudysays:July 3, 2015 at 3:40 pm

Not on firetv or firetv stick in the UK yet.

ReplyStevesays:July 8, 2015 at 12:11 pm

Anyone else having issues with wifi since this latest firmware update? I'm getting a flashing orange light on the fire tv device and the error message that it can't connect to my network. However, I also have a Roku and WD Media Center connected (as well as ipads, iphones, computers, etc) and those are all working fine. Also tried ethernet cable but also receive an error that says it's not connected to the internet.

ReplyJPsays:July 8, 2015 at 4:57 pm

I received the update today. As two others stated I can add apps to my favorites but I can't sort them as such- it's of no use for me as it doesn't make it easier to search them out. Also, the update removed all my recent apps from the main 'recent' section. I was forced to search them in my 'My Apps' section only to discover that not all my apps show there either. I had to go to my installed apps section to bring them all the front again. I am not seeing all my games on cloud either. Before the update I was seeing 68 or so apps but now I can only see 55 apps.
